Saint Rocco

of Montpellier

Affresco di Paolo Ligozzi nel XVI secolo che rappresenta il santo francese col cane che gli lecca la ferita, come vuole la tradizione popolare.

Celebrated on the 16 August as Patron of disabled people and prisoners, he leads the emblem of the dog. San Rocco was born in Montpellier in France, in the XIV century in a wealthy family, but he became an orphan very soon. Surrounded by inaccurate sources and many legends, we remember him, during a pilgrimage to Rome, for giving his possessions to the poor, in Aquapendente, close to Viterbo; he devoted himself to plague victims with miraculous healings who spread his fame. He probably died in prison after being arrested by some soldiers at Angera because he was suspected of espionage. Claimed in the campaigns against diseases of livestock and natural disasters, his worship spread deeply in the north part of Italy, linked in particular to the role of protector against the plague..
